The Go anywhere, Do anything Veldskoen

Vellies were originally designed to withstand the harshest arid climates, here at Jim Green we have taken no short cuts in production, to make sure our vellies live up to this age-old design.
We truly believe that the Jim Green vellie is the best value for money vellie available in South Africa. With the quality of materials used and our ability to resole them they will be with you for many years to come.
  • Manufactured with a single layer of 2.2mm full grain leather
  • The traditional vellie – South Africa’s most loved shoe
  • Insole board is secured to the upper with a double stitched 2.2mm braided nylon cord
  • Sole is made from a pure rubber R4 compound and is supported with a steal shank
  • This boot can be re soled
  • Last: STC (This is a wide fit and offers a roomy and rounded toe box)
  • Sole: BR (This sole is our all rounder option and is designed for durability in and urban and outdoor combination)
  • Weight: 1.16 kg (Size 8)
  • Laces: 90 cm
The best way to preserve your Jim Greens is through regular and correct polishing. Water, heat and wear remove the natural oil from the leather, so when the tiny fibres dry out they become hard, brittle and break easily, thereby shorten the life of the leather.
For our leather boots we recommend any natural shoe polish found at your local store. For our suede options we suggest light brushing to remove dirt and a scotchguard for longer protection.
After a long day in wet conditions and you requiring your boots early the next morning, the worst possible solution is to artificially dry your boots. Leather fibres burn easily – especially when wet and therefore should never be left near a heater, placed in your oven or left in direct sunlight. For the best results, footwear should be dried out slowly and never subjected to any extreme heat. Should you work in constantly wet conditions, it is best to alternate between two or more pairs of our Jim Green boots.
We realise that buying footwear online is a daunting task and we are often asked to recommend a size by new Jim Green customers. If you happen to purchase a pair of Jim Green boots online and they do not fit, we will happily exchange them for you. If the measurements fall in-between the lengths provided, we do offer half sizes on certain styles. We can recommend a size but we can’t guarantee the fit.

I really like the design of these. Handsome, Super Rubber, The best leather. Very comfortable. I like wearing them with or without socks. At end of day My freet can do more like go have fun.. I really like the cleanup procedure. Brush clean and I hit the sole threads with my air hose. They will last a long time before i need to resole.

What a bargain!! Super comfortable true to size (added Dr scholls insert under original insole to take up some space for my narrow 12.5 foot)

Breakin is pretty quick and the quality of construction is unmatched at this price!
Bought all four colors in this style and they were of all the same top quality of build!!

Excellent. I just received these, and though it might be better to wear them for a while longer before reviewing them, I’m already confident that they’re top notch. I followed the advice of measuring my foot, and the fit is good. Plenty of room in the toe-box, without the boot being too big. I’ve been wearing them around the house and yard today with
wool socks and they are comfortable. The insoles are fine. They’re not squooshy and fancy, but they work. This is a proper boot. Very simple and sturdy design. The double-stitching around the welt is a nice feature that I don’t see on footwear that’s twice the price or more. Quality materials. Well done.

Super comfortable. The toe box is the widest on any boot I own so your toes can breathe. The suede is so supple it feels like a sock right out of the box. Honestly I think these are more comfortable than most sneakers.

No major complaints on these. You may find a couple flyaway stitches or places where the rubber on the sole overshot the mold, but nothing that can’t be trimmed easily and nothing that would affect the longevity of the boot. The construction feels solid and better than what you pay for at just under $100. Overall a great looking and great wearing boot. Was so impressed with my vellies I also ordered a pair of Razorbacks and I am considering another pair of vellies.

Absolutely fantastic value for money with these boots. Just received them, and I’m already so impressed with the build quality and materials. The double row stitchdown construction seems SOLID, and the leather is dense yet supple. The rubber sole is a perfect blend of durability and comfort. Can’t wait to get some miles in these things.

On a side note, since I pre-ordered these a few months back in the US, it took a bit for them to arrive while the company produced and shipped a large stock to meet the new US demand. (I guess I’m not the only one that sees the excellent value in these boots!) Anyway, I had a few questions along the way, and I have to say, I was blown away at the timely and friendly support I received. Very impressed with the customer service team. So, between the awesome people and incredible product, we’ve got a winner here!

These are sturdy shoes, well made with thick but supple leather uppers and a dense rubber outsole that looks as if it will prove far more durable (though less cushy) than the crepe soles on typical chukkas. The website photos accurately depict the color of the leather.

Although the website recommends ordering the same US size as your Brannock size, my previous experience with these vellies suggested that a half-size smaller would be a better fit. I ordered these in US size 11 1/2 and they are a very good fit. If I planned to wear them without socks, I think going down a full size from my Brannock size (12D) would probably do the trick.

This could be the perfect boot, but it isn’t. The leather is awesome. The sole is awesome. The last is more suited to people who grew up wearing shoes like a slightly wider American boot. Only issue is the lack of shaping in the heal cup/ankle. There is nothing to stop heal lift. They should have added a rear seam to provide a shaped cup to hold the heal in place better. That would make this a first rate boot.

These are most comfortable shoes I own — without a doubt. Straight out of the box, the rough out leather is extremely supple. I can’t imagine how soft they will be once they are “broken in.” I adore these shoes and I’m confident you will as well.

Recently found out about Jim Green. Decided to try out two pairs so I could rotate, in two colors: Rough-out Chestnut and Rough-out Khaki. Right out of the box, the fit was great. True to Bannock sizing. One of my feet is just smaller than an US11, while my other foot is just larger than a US10. I went with size 11 but was concerned it might feel too long on my one smaller foot. Thank goodness that’s not a problem! I’ve already emailed customer service, asking if I ever custom order, if it’s possible to get two different sizes for my feet – they answered that it’s not a problem at all! So looking forward to eventually custom ordering a pair that will be a perfect fit.
Between the rough-out chestnut & khaki colors, I like the khaki better. I tend to wear the chestnut when I know the boots are going to get really dirty. The chestnut doesn’t show dirt as easy as the khaki. A week after owning these first two pairs, I purchased the rough-out Chocolate, which is my favorite color of all three. The chocolate has gotten the most compliments. Hopefully they stock other vellie rough-out/suede colors in the US. Would love to own the blue and black.

    I am a 12.5 D brannock, and ordered a 12.5. I have about 5hrs of wear on these.

Pros: Undeniably solid materials and construction. Just an obviously higher-quality chukka vs. competitors like Ugg or Clarks. Great look. If these work for you, they are a stellar boot.

Cons: I absolutely cannot stand the Ronald McDonald style fit. The heel is perfect at 12.5, but it’s way too roomy and sloppy everywhere forward. You have to crank down on the laces to stop them from flopping around as you walk, which leads to instep squeezing and pain, constantly stopping to adjust the lacing, eventually turning around and heading home to change shoes. The hollow “clomp, clomp” sound of your huge clown shoes flopping against the pavement never goes away. And I had to go through the break-in period in order to discover this, so no returns…

Verdict: Into the trash, so there goes $100. Will not be repeating the Jim Green experiment.
