Frequently Asked Questions

Men

Our sizing is true to the brannock device, if you do not have access to this, please use our size guide located in the “info” section of each boot for our recommendation. This is our recommendation so we can’t guarantee the fit and feel as each foot is unique and may require alternative sizing to what we recommend. For further info on the fit per style please refer to our last information tab

The inserts in our boots are removeable so fit and comfort can be adjusted with a thinner or thicker option from around the house or your local store. Should you be replacing them with your orthotics or thicker alternatives, we recommend going a half size up.

Ladies

Please use our size guide located in the “info” section of each boot for our recommendation. This is our recommendation so we can’t guarantee fit and feel as each customer’s foot is unique and may require alternative sizing to what we recommend. For further info on the fit per style please refer to our last information tab

Where there is no ladies style available, we recommend to still follow the sizing guide. Our sizes UK3 / US4.5 to UK6/ US7.5 are a unisex cut. Sizes bigger than this are a men’s cut and we suggest going a half size down to accommodate for the extra width.

The inserts in our boots are removeable so fit and comfort can be adjusted with a thinner or thicker option from around the house or your local store. Should you be replacing them with your orthotics or thicker alternatives, we recommend going a half size up.

Our lasts

All Jim Green boots are a standard wide fit. Our boots are used in rugged demanding terrain and the extra room allows for added comfort for those longer days on your feet. We offer a few lasts in our range and below is information on them and the styles associated:

JG last – This is a wide fit and offers a snugger feel all around. This last, we use on our Razorback, Stockman slip on, 4×4, Bushcat and ARG Boot

STC last – This is a wide fit and offers a roomy and rounded toe box (more room above the toes). This last, we use on our African Ranger, Vellie, and Outback Slip On

MO last – This is a standard width with a roomy and rounded toe box. This last, we use on our Monster Range

Your first few miles

Jim Green boots are made from heavy duty components and full grain leathers so some customers can take a good few miles to break them in. The boots should be a tighter fit at first and as you break them in, they will stretch and form to your feet. Keep in mind they should be snug, but not uncomfortable.

Your first few wears should be around the house and as the boots take to your feet you can add more milage onto them until you are confident enough to wear for a full day’s activities.

Adjusting the fit and feel while breaking in

As our insert is removeable fit and comfort can be adjusted with a thinner or thicker insert from around the house or from your local store. While our stock option does the job for the majority, some customers do prefer to swop these out for alterative options. There are many different types of inserts available in the market that will assist you in getting the perfect fit.

By removing the inserts and trying on the boots without them, you will get an idea of what a half size up would feel like.

Your sock option plays a big part in the fit and feel of your boots too, we suggest trying the boots on with various types of socks to get a more accurate feel to how the boots will fit all round.

Training the Tongue

Due to the design of our boots tongue, you will need to “train” the tongue and laces as they break in. Making sure the laces and tongue are correctly positioned for a comfortable fit, will make for an easy break in and a better all round feel. With time and wear the laces and tongue will take to your feet and form a natural shape. If there is a slight discomfort or something out of place, then you will need to adjust the lacing and position correctly.

SHOE CARE PROCESS

Step 1) Start off by removing lose dirt with a dry brush

Step 2) Use an old toothbrush as less abrasive to clean the harder to reach areas and the stitching

Step 3) Apply a saddle soap or any other trusted product from your local store to the upper with a brush and then wipe down soon after applying. Don’t drench the boot, so it is best to work on small areas at a time. After applying to the entire boot, wipe the boot down with a damp cloth

Step 4) Now that the boot is clean it is time to condition the leather. As there are many products available on the market it is best to use a trusted product from your local store. Depending on the look and use of your boots, each product will offer various benefits to their use. What we suggest is a natural bees wax or leather balm. For our suede or crazy horse leather options apply a suede cleaner.

For our crazy horse leather options repeat steps 1 to 3 then choose one of the 2 options below:

Option 1: If you prefer a lighter look and want the oils to develop naturally, we suggest applying a suede cleaner

Option 2: If you prefer a darker look then apply a bee’s wax or a leather balm. At first the leather will go very dark but after 3 or so days it gradually lightens up as the polish sinks in. This option does add a bit more waterproofing to the boots, although the boots will not be 100% waterproof

Shoe Care Tips

  • With regular cleaning, care and rest you will get a lot more use out of your pair of Jim Green boots. It is best rotate between two or three pairs of boots to get the most use out of them
  • If your boots get soaking wet, we recommend inserting newspaper into them and leave to dry in a cool breexy area. Leaving your boots in the sun or direct heat causes the leather to crack and harden up creating discomfort

If your boots are not used often you should “flex” your boots regularly. If not by wearing, then by hand. This keeps the glue nice and flexible, and the sole won’t crack or peel off.

All Information can be found on the relative websites.

If you are not located in a country where we are stocked, the next option would be to order though our SA website (www.jimgreenfootwear.co.za), it will add on shipping charges and once the boots arrive there may be duties and charges which will be for your account.
