The Boot that Puts Boots onto Rangers

50% of Rangers don’t have access to sufficient Boots and Gear and over 40% are required to purchase their own Boots.

With the future of our wilderness areas in the hands of those with boots on the ground, Jim Green Footwear and The Game Rangers Association of Africa (GRAA) have come together to make sure this issue is addressed.

Inadequate gear for rangers leads to low morale and affects rangers’ wellbeing. With Rangers being on the front line of our conservation areas, a quality pair of boots is essential for everyday tasks.

We put out a survey to Rangers from Across Africa and from that pulled together various focus points as to what is needed in the ultimate all-round Ranger Boot. From that, we give you the African Ranger – A Boot Designed By Rangers For Rangers.

Follow our journey through our social channels or contact us for further information.

Unlike the Razorback & Numzaan, this shoe is not manufactured with a single piece of leather for the vamp. Several smaller pieces are stitched together, so that the cost of manufacturing is lowered. Other cost cutting measures include double row stitching as opposed to a triple row Puritan stitch, no lining, and a synthetic poly-woven midsole.

The veg ReTan leather does need conditioning . You will need to protect the leather from the elements and weather. I use mink oil and neatsfoot oil. Oil and water don’t mix. Once you have oiled the leather, water will not be able to saturate the leather. A wax based polish will do wonders for beading off moisture. Jim Green has a leather balm. In The USA, I get a Made In USA shoes polish named Lincoln. You can use any brand for a wax top coat.

Because of the construction, this shoe will not require the same break in as a Numzaan boot. The leather will still be stiff when new. The thick padded collar, which is supposed to provide comfort and support, will dig into your ankle and achilles. The soft outsole and synthetic lasting boards flexes easily. The vamp will bend and flex with every step, like a sneaker.

As a gift for a new semester, I received my second pair of ARs. The veg tan is a definite step up from the nubuck fudge in terms of maintenance, but it’s a much stiffer leather that will take longer to break in. It’s not a big deal, though, since the AR is single-lasted and already pretty wide. If I understand correctly, this new veg tan leather is similar to the famous Horween Chromexcel leather. Visually, this leather has a darker dress shoe-esque appearance, although they noticably lean red. They’re really quite nice, and I think they elevate the AR to business casual status. Well, I already wear my other ones to the office as well, but you know what I mean.

Comfort-wise, the wideGreen insoles from Superfeet are basically a must-have for any new pairs of Jim Green boots. Jim Green nails everything but the insoles in my experience, and having extra support combined with everything else about these boots makes the African Ranger the most comfortable pair of anything I own. Add premium leather, and these are the best all-around footwear that I have in my collection.
