Embrace Nature with the African Ranger Barefoot Boot
The African Ranger Barefoot Boot is all about keeping things natural and comfy for your feet. It’s like giving your feet a smooth ride on level ground. Plus, there’s lots of space up front in the toe area, so your big toe and pinkie toe can spread out without feeling squished against the sides. These boots are like your foot’s best friend – they’re super flexible and can bend and twist just like your foot would. The soles are thin, so you can feel the ground beneath you better. Going barefoot-style is where the magic happens. No need to worry about springs in your toes or fancy arch support. These boots let your feet do their thing naturally. So, if you’re all about comfy, flexible, and feet-happy footwear, the barefoot boot is where it’s at!

5 USA National Parks in 7 Days –
I just returned from a trip where I wore my Ranger Barefoot’s through 5 national parks (Arches, Canyon Lands, Mesa Verde, Great Sand Dunes, and Rocky Mountain National Park) within a little over a week. The environment/challenge these boots had to face varied wildly from day to day but they were worn every day with lots of miles put on them over the week.
These boots had to handle sand dunes, desert scrub, marshes, scrambling up/down cliffs, and hiking through 4 foot tall snow during this trip. They were used for backpacking, camping, hiking, rock scrambling, etc. They handled each use case and challenge like a champ. My feet were dry and comfortable the whole time and I never felt like I wasn’t getting enough grip or protection.
My only issue was during ascent and descent of a canyon, they were tied tight and I still had some issues with my feet sliding forward into the front of the shoe and bruising my heel and toes depending on the direction. This problem was definitely moreso due to limitations of barefoot boots rather than any fault of this specific shoe.
If I had any constructive criticism to give, it would be to experiment with different structure in order to minimize the amount of movement the foot experiences during ascent/descent scenarios. Possibly tightening the angle of the ankle support to allow better immobilization of the foot.
I would recommend these boots in a heartbeat to anyone who is looking for a great all around leather barefoot adventure boot.

My first Jim Green boot was the African Ranger Barefoot. It’s the most perfect shoe for me! Perfect fit and barefoot zero drop! My feet pains while standing at work is basically gone now.
I’ve bought barefoot African Troopers and they are basically the same thing as the rangers except taller.
I also just bought the Numzan with the tire sole. It is a good looking boot, but not as comfortable as the barefoot ranger.
Highly recommend Jim Green’s!

TLDR: if you’re looking for real barefoot boots, keep looking.
Let me start off by saying, this is a really well-built boot for the price. It definitely rivals $350 Red Wings in terms of construction quality, materials, etc. It’s zero-drop as advertised, and for a boot, it’s very wide. If you’re a traditional boot guy or gal looking for a pair of roomy boots that will last a lifetime and don’t take months to break in, this is probably a solid option.
That being said, it is NOT “barefoot.” Yes, it’s wider than most boots, but the toe box is still a traditional tapered/rounded shape that slopes in evenly from both sides, which pinches your big toe and leaves too much room at your pinky toe. It’s not an anatomical toe box like you’d find on Xeros or Vivos that actually follows the shape of the foot.
Yes, it’s zero-drop, but the sole is so thick and heavy that it pretty much doesn’t matter. Walking in these felt like walking in clown shoes. Despite being zero-drop, the walking experience was actually worse than heeled boots, because instead of being designed to roll forward from heel to toe, these smack the ground with the full length of the sole all at once.
Yes, they are more flexible that traditional boots, but that really isn’t saying much. The sole is as stiff and heavy as my pair of knock-off Timbs. And if I already own a pair of uncomfortable clown clogs that I begrudgingly put on when the weather gets bad enough, I don’t really need these.
I was hoping for a forever boot that treated my feet right. Looks like I’m still hoping.

warning: day 1 review
[...]love these boots soo much. amazing price for a quality leather shoe. i am an afab trans person who wears between an 8.5 and a 9 (9.75 inches foot length without socks) with extra wide feet. I ordered a 7 and it fits perfectly. I was worried based on reviews that I should have gotten a 7.5. But these are extra roomy and fit wool socks well. They were also warm enough without insoles in the snow. I am super excited to see how they wear and resole. The volume of the shoe really helped accommodate my wide feet and the adjustability of the uppers helped with my skinny ankles. I will say it’s not a completely barefoot print, but my big toe has lots of room to splay. my pinkies, if i *really* flex start hitting th sides, but i have that nice relaxed fit when i’m not splaying super widely. I am happy to have a boot that fits amazingly and doesn’t look like a clown shoe! and is repairable. i love feelgrounds, but the soles wear through so fast, and the “vegan leather” looks horrible less than a year in! I hope my review helps other people with similar situations order the right size. i didn’t experience any uncomfortable rubbing with the gusseted tongue or the back. i did notice the back rim of the shoe is stiff, but it should get more malleable with wear. and no rubbing so far.

I have been a barefoot convert for around a year before I saw a video about the Ranger boots. I used Vivo and Xero boots at work, but thoses are not shoes that I would discribe as boots. More like slippers or socks. I really like both of them, and, while I’m on my feet all day, and I do not work constuction or a job that requries traditional work boots, the other metioned brands did not provide robustnest I was used to. Both great shoes and brands I ware outsode of work. But Man, the Jim Green Barefoot shoes are the best shoes I’ve ever owned, better than non-barefoot shoes, just the best shoes I have ever owned. People ask me about my barefoot transition, and I tell them that, if your feet don’t hurt, then don’t move to barefoot, unless your foot pain is driving you crazy. But I tell everyone, barefoot or not, to buy Jim Green shoes. They are just the best shoes arountd. And they just happen to make barefoot styles. Best shoes.

Very close to perfect. This is the most durable zero drop boot on the market. It took about four days to break in and I ordered my normal boot size at 9 1/2. Fits perfectly. I use these to go on several mile long walks and they’re very comfortable. They are a little more narrow than my Lems boots which is my main complaint. Plenty of room for the big toe but the little toe presses against the boot. I’m hoping that future iterations are just a tad wider or they offer a wider version. Ordering a size up would make it too long so that wasn’t an option for me. Overall, it’s a good buy and I’d still get this over Lems due to durability.

I am a barefoot shoe guy through and through, and these hit the spot for flat out comfort, get it? flat. Any how puns aside I love these and they are perfect for hiking, light work activities, and just standing on any surface. Good job Jim Green, keep up the barefoot boot revolution!

I was expecting comfort, but these are surprisingly way more comfortable than I would’ve thought right out of the box. If you are used to wearing flatter shoes you will have no problem adjusting to these. Since there isn’t a steel shank, there is next to no break in time. I love how durable yet flexible they are. There is also plenty of breathing room in the toe for me personally. Excited to see how long they last because I can tell its going to be a very long time.

Just received my first pair of JG BF african rangers, very impressed with the comfort and build quality off the jump. Didn’t know if I should’ve gotten a 14 or a 13.5 ,but glad I went for the smaller because they fit just right ,but not tight! Only thing I’d change about the shoe if I could would for it to be completely lace up without the hooks ,but thats just my preference and knew what I was buying, all in all I’d recommend these boots, the black looks sleek & they felt good when I was out shopping and walking around, recommend! also fast shipping is A+

these boots are great
jim greens worked with rose anvil to increase the quality even more which really sold me on these boots
all leather, no inner liner just solid high quality leather, i dont like liners they deteriorate over time so i was attracted to these boots
they are smooth on the inside i dont feel any seems or ridges so they must be trimmed and sewn with precision inside
when i first put them on the sole felt like a board and i was concerned but they are already beginning to conform to my feet and i feel comfortable in them like no other shoe or boot i have every had
wide toe box gives me toes room to move and breathe
some people said these are “floppy” but i have to admit that is a a reason that i like them they are non-constricting and comfortable and breathe
they are supportive i was walking on a hill with them and i felt secure
i just plan to use the in the yard nothing extreme
the one negative was on close inspection one of the eyelets were not properly stamped i thought about returning them but 2/3 of the eyelet was intact so i got out a file and smoothed it out, but i read another reviewer say the same thing about his boots, so i hope the get that resolved on the production line, for this price they should all be stamped correctly in my opinion, but i doubt the eyelet will fall apart so i just let it go, but it was almost a deal breaker

So I own 2 pairs of the barefoot ranger and have ordered a custom Vellie with the barefoot last. These are great boots and a company that’s really easy to work with. These are highly flexible and comfortable out of the box but there is a period of break in (to be assumed with leather boots). A few days of walking around and wear and all of a sudden they are much more flexible and comfortable on your feet. These are easily all day boots, no foot fatigue whether walking outside or standing on hard surfaces. All in all a really great addition to barefoot wear! Highly recommend!!
