Casually Formal

Is it a Shoe? Is it a Vellie? No! It’s the SHOELLIE

We were after an option that can be worn with shorts for those casual Fridays and come the weekend worn with some chinos for your best friend’s wedding. We blended the standard upper of a chukka boot in with the low cut of a formal shoe and found the perfect balance between casual and smart. Our wide fitting lasts weren’t going to make the cut for that wedding you going to attend, so we added in our new standard width last to give you that touch of fashion you after. This is all topped off with our Oringo wedge sole which has quickly become a much sought after option.

Finally a footwear option where formal meets casual meets durability. The SHOELLIE.

  • Manufactured with a single layer of 2.2mm Oily Nubuck leather.
  • A steel shank between the insole board and sole offers extra support and stability.
  • Thermoplastic toe puff and a heel stiffener for extra support.
  • Midsole is secured to the upper with a double stitched 2.2mm braided nylon cord.
  • Sole is made from a genuine soft rubber compound offering extra comfort.
  • This boot can be re-soled.
  • ASHM last – This is a deceivingly narrow in look last but still offers the traditional D width wide fit with a slightly tapered toe box(for those with wide feet or wearing thick socks we suggest going a half size up from your normal Jim Green size).
  • Sole: OR (This sole is designed for a combination of grip, comfort, and speed. It is a genuine rubber and of a softer feel to provide comfort under foot).
  • Laces: 100 cm.
  • Weight: 1.1 kg (Size 8 US).
  • 100% Made in South Africa.

Great! Been looking for a more casual shoe I’d wear everyday. They are dry to begin with and living here in CO they started to get a little too dry, especially with all the salt on the ground. I brushed, water cleaned and applied some Obenaufs which indeed changed the colour, but they have more character now. Large Logo on the back doesn’t bother me, in fact I like it. Looks cool! I’d venture to say make them a little wider. They are true to size (10B for me) but I’d still prefer just a little wider shoe.

Great looking and fitting shoes at a great price. However, in the on line photos, the saddle part looks like a slightly different color than the rest of the shoe, and that is what I was looking for and it was one of the reasons I bought them. When I received them, the shoes were all one color with no contrast between the two parts of the shoe. I solved the problem with some Cobbler’s Choice Co. leather cream. With my index finger I carefully rubbed in the cream on the saddle part on both sides of the shoe. The leather cream darkened the leather just enough to provide a contrast and instantly gave the shoes more character. Now I love them.

    Pros…..
    Comfortable.
    Nice looking.
    Easy break in.
They look great in shorts, jeans and can pass for formal shoes if necessary.
Simple unlined rugged construction, expecting years of use.

    Cons…..
    Nothing notable

    Wish list…..
I “wish” JG would offer these with a leather innersole. I’m not for the removeable type. After completing 30 miles they are holding up very well, but leather is better. I also “wish” the eyelets were metal and not just holes punched through the leather, but they are also holding up very well. Very happy with my purchase.

    Formal meets casual meets rugged.

The best casual dress shoe I’ve ever owned. I’ve never been one to wear dressy looking shoes, but the Shoellies are an exception for me and are a perfect blend of a dress shoe and a boot. I’ve found myself grabbing these shoes nearly every-time I leave the house because they are so versatile, comfortable and look good with any outfit. The fudge color is beautiful and pictures do not do it justice, it’s also started to develop a nice patina with a month of hard wear and are holding up great – they feel very well made and I expect them to last a while. I am a construction estimator and have walked job sites in these things and even done some work in them! The leather is nice and thick, the soles are great for all surfaces and it fits very nicely with plenty of arch support. I got my usual size 12 in boots and my feet are a bit wide, but have no issues with width not even the toe box. I also got the black pair for more dressy occasions and they’re beautiful too.

Another review gave less stars for the Jim Green logo being on the back of the shoe, but I think it’s a really nice touch and gives the shoe character.

I wrote this review because I want Jim Green to continue making these shoes, and I will keep purchasing them as well as being your biggest advocate. Also looking to try other styles of theres after being so impressed – especially for the price point. Never change Jim Green!

A few days in and so far so good. Fudge is a great color, pictures were accurate, sole seems tough enough to get a few years out of them. I love rustic and rough cut boots, and these are great mix of rugged but fancy enough for the office or a dressed-up date.

Downsides? The included insoles are pretty thick, and I got significant heal lift with them in place. I used a thinner pair with better success.

Sizing: I normally wear a 12.5 or 13, and while I’ve sized down in other similar shoes like Red Wing Weekenders, I wanted to see what would happen if I didn’t. Low and behold, they are a little big, so I should’ve gone for the 12s without insoles. That would’ve firmly planted my heal in the cup, reducing lift, however, I’d still not run these with thick insoles as they are just too short.

These are very good shoes. They are good looking, yet have a supportive, durable feel to them. Love the outdoor spirit of the shoes. You can fix a fence with them. And you can wear them to the office for a day of computer work and go out to a nice restaurant afterwards.

Jim Green’s Shoelies blew away my expectations. I have the buffalo skin African Rangers, and the chestnut Vellies also.
Nice thick leather with a very comfortable fit. Incredibly comfortable right out of the box. I gave them some boot oil, which darkened them a little, and away I went. The fudge leather looks and smells wonderful.
I usually wear a 10.5 brannock size and got these in an 11 because I have wide feet. A perfectly snug fit, but not tight. Vellies and African Rangers I wear a 10.5 for comparison.
Jim Green you did it again. A+

Finally, a pair of stitched construction resolable shoes that I can wear with shorts! These feel really well made for the price and are comfortable right out of the box. I really hope they bring this narrower last to more of their products because it looks so much nicer and fits me very well. I also saw that they offer a suede (or roughout?) version of the Shoellie on their .co.za website and am hoping they bring that to the US. A premium version with a leather lasting board would also be nice to see.

Overall build seems good upon initial inspection. You’ll be quite surprised by a gigantic logo on the heel which completely undercuts the point of a subtle shoe. I am debating returning them especially since they disguised this fact in the pictures.

Absolutely amazing comfort and such a solid build. Looks great with khakis, jeans, or shorts. Second pair of Jim Greens (Razorback two years ago still going strong), and these reinforce the comfort, quality, and durability that I’ve come to associate with Jim Greens. Customer for life.
