The Boot that Puts Boots onto Rangers
50% of Rangers don’t have access to sufficient Boots and Gear and over 40% are required to purchase their own Boots.
With the future of our wilderness areas in the hands of those with boots on the ground Jim Green Footwear and The Game Rangers Association of Africa (GRAA) have come together to make sure this issue is addressed.
Inadequate gear for rangers leads to a low morale and affects rangers’ wellbeing. With Rangers being on the front line of our conservation areas a quality pair of boots is essential for everyday tasks.
An addition to the Ranger family with a more robust finish and high ankle support while still prioritising comfort, we introduce the African Ranger 8 inch.
Follow our journey through our social channels or contact us for further information.
- Manufactured with a double layer of leather (2.2mm full grain leather, lined with 1.6mm calf leather).
- Double layer of leather aids in the boots’ water-resistant properties (not waterproof).
- 8-inch height for excellent support, comfort, and protection.
- Thermoplastic toe puff and a heel stiffener for extra support.
- A steel shank between the insole board and sole offers extra support and stability.
- Insole board is secured to the upper with a double-stitched 2.2mm braided nylon cord.
- Sole is made from genuine rubber.
- Can be resoled.
- Due to the double layer of leather, the AR8 can tackle all kinds of terrain, making it ideal for the outdoor worker or hiker requiring that extra bit of toughness.

I was able to get a pair of these special ordered several months back. I wear them for work everyday. They are holding up well and the lug sole has been holding up and is comfortable. I use boot grease on them every couple of months and they still look great. Worth the price. I own a pair of Razors and Vellies too. I wear a 9 1/2 in most shoes. I ordered a 9 1/2 and they firt perfectly. These do have a wide toe box ( Amazing!) So if your foot is very narrow keep that in mind when ordering.

Very good quality boot. Nice stitching, welt, gusseted tongue.
Light weight and flexible boot.
Insole is not supportive and the outsole is stiff.
I recommend adding extra insole for padding.
True to size even with 2 insoles. Go half size down if you will use 1 insole, due to extra wide toe.
Soft Toe box is slim. Not bulky like steel toes.
1 day break in. Has leather lining, so no chaffing.
There is no pull tab on the heel.
Good quality compared to the cheap throw away boots at same price.

To be honest these have been the best pair of boots I have ever bought. I originally heard of this company through Rose Anvil and wanting something that could withstand a beating due to the region I live in I purchased these boots thinking they would do the job nicely and boy have they. Never have I had a pair of shoes so reliable and sturdy in my life. These boots have been through rain, snow, shine and mud and still have not failed me.

I work as a park ranger in the state of Colorado and I figured that these would match my requirements pretty well.
At work I will frequently hike 6+ miles, both on and off trail. I work year round in extreme cold, heat, wetness and dryness, and often work on boats. Also, I am limited to black boots only. I acknowledged the fact that there is no boot that can transition from trail, to construction project, to boat, to snow perfectly, so I focused on finding a boot that can get me through the busiest, warmest, driest part of the year. I also wanted to find something that would last longer than 8 months (my current record for longest lasting boot).
Pros:
Toe Box – It is extremely comfortable. More so than the tennis shoes I wear on the weekend. I would describe it as wide, but low. I can splay my toes out inside the boots, but it never feels loose. This is, weirdly, my favorite thing about these boots.
Construction – Very solid and will very clearly last longer than my previous boots.
The Look – Simple, professional, and clean.
Leather – Very thick and protects the feet against brush, fallen branches, cactus, etc.
Weight/Flex – the boots are not THAT heavy, not compared to some of the work boots I’ve tried in the past. And the sole is extremely flexible for as hard/thick as it is.
Sizing – very true to size. My foot measured as a 9.5, so I bought a 10 to allow for thicker inserts and socks
Price per quality- I can see these lasting a good while, and the price is about half of what my co-workers spent on Danners.
The mission of Jim Green in donating boots to rangers in Africa, what’s not to like?
Cons
Waterproofing – These boots are not waterproof, but in my experience, boots with waterproof liners wear out after about 1 month of heavy walking anyway.
Foot Softness- The insole that comes with is garbage, but so are most inserts with most boot brands. I added my favorite Keen inserts and have not had a problem since. Standing on hard surfaces for long periods is a bit of a challenge. Next time I will do a custom order to get a better midsole added.
Heel comfort – Maybe it was my foot, maybe it was the boot, but these caused serious blisters on my heel. I suffered through it for a while hoping it was the break in period, but gave up and bought some adhesive backed pads that start under the heel (and under the insole) and curve up to cover the heel of the boot. Since then, the boots feel and fit like gloves.
Warmth and Breathability – These can get a bit warm in high temperatures, but they cool down quickly in the shade. The breathability is not as fantastic as a mesh hiker, so sometimes it’s nice to stop and remove the boots to let them breath. But that’s the trade off for bomb proof boots.
All in all – These boots are extremely well made, and will last a seriously long time. They required a little bit of customizing (the sole and heel inserts) but I generally add stuff like that on my own to most of my boots. When I am walking on hard surfaces, I wish the boot soles were softer. But when I am in the backcountry I really appreciate the firm foot bed provided by the harder soles. Actually, recently I switched to an older softer pair of boots for a 5 mile hike and I was surprised that it felt like I was walking in sand…comparatively.
I’ve had these boots for just over 2 months now, and I am really happy with my purchase.

The Jim Green AR-8 boots have been my go to duty boots for about 1 year as a police officer. The wide toe box is far superior to any other full leather duty boot I have worn and easily accommodates thick wool socks (I recommend “darn tough” socks. How do they compare to other premium leather duty boots like “All American” patrol boots out of LA?; the proprietary outsole of the AR-8 are noticeably more durable than the Vibrams although they have less impact absorption than the Vibrams. The fit and finish on the AR-8s isn’t as nice-more utilitarian. Additionally, there is no tow stiffener so the AR-8s dont take quite the “class A ” polish as easily as some Police Depts. require. The speed hooks are awesome and once again, the wide toe box makes these the most comfortable duty boots I’ve ever worn and they dont cramp your feet after 12 hr + shifts. Also, these boots cost about 150$ less than my All Americans. The yellow internal leather dye on the AR-8s will stain white socks. Regarding fit and finish, I wish the welt on the upper was flush with the outsole; it’s curled up a little in some spots.
In addition to continous patrol, I have used these boots for hiking with no noticeable wear. Definitely give these a try if your department requires full leather boots
