The Barefoot Trooper Boot: Comfort Meets Rugged Durability
Introducing the new Barefoot Trooper boot, a collaboration between Jim Green Footwear and Rose Anvil. A newly designed boot that combines the natural movement and comfort of barefoot footwear with the added support, protection, and versatility needed for demanding outdoor activities. This collaboration not only brings together the history of Jim Green and knowledge of Rose Anvil but also the traditions of American and South African boot-making techniques.
The Barefoot African Trooper boot combines the natural comfort of barefoot-style footwear with the durability essential for everyday tasks in challenging environments. Its sturdy design and high ankle support provide necessary protection, while the flexible sole and spacious toe box allow your feet to move naturally and comfortably.
The flexible sole mimics the natural movement of your foot, providing a new level of comfort and freedom, while the thin soles improve the natural ground feel, giving you better traction and control. The spacious toe box ensures that your toes can spread out naturally, reducing discomfort and allowing for better stability.

WORTH IT. I originally bought these on a lark, having never really done barefoot boots, or for that matter tall shaft boots in the last ~10 years. I thought I’d wear them 10-20 times just as a palate cleanser from my more expensive boots. Over the course of the last year they’ve become my most worn pair out of the too many I own. After you go zero-drop, it’s actually kind of hard to go back. A couple notes for those considering:
1. Sizing – I am close to a 10.5 bannock and went with 10.5; I could have gotten away with a 10, I have about 1/3 cm extra space to work with, and discovered later that I can take a 10 easily in the JG last due to the width. Will size down a notch for my next pair.
[...]2. Leather – The bronco leather ages great, but the clicking is usually spotty. Not at all a dealbreaker in utilitarian boots, but some of the panels are much looser than others on the opposing boot. You can have the comfort to really get out there, there’s no shame in scratching these up. The wax pools in the various scars and bites the animal endured before it was a boot, my pair has several freckles.
3. Unlined – these are great in the summer, I’ve caught myself completely sweating through them in the heat. Much more breathable in warm weather than the double-lasted boots JG offers, IMO.
4. Soles – by my numbers, these soles should last around 6-9 months assuming you’re doing 2-3 miles of trails a day or the equivalent thereof. Generally impressed with the durability and traction. Not as suited to uneven surfaces, especially downhill and especially wet conditions. They also tend to pick up plant matter. Something to keep in mind for yard work or hikes.

OK, it’s really 4.5+. Let me explain.
If it’s your first time, definitely don’t round up on your shoe size. All my measurements said I should get a 10 (foot measurement in inches is 10 and 9/16, which translates to a sz 10, but I have wide feet so I rounded up to a 10.5, now I’m exchanging it a 10 because it’s too long)
The good: Beautiful boot. Beautful leather. Amazing cause. This is my first heritage style boot. Very interesting how the leather changes color as it bends and you see a lot of texture right away. That may deter some people but I like seeing patina on things. Also, the shipping was crazy fast. It estimated it would arrive on 1/6 and it actually arrived 1/2.
[...]The bad: there was a defect in the RIGHT sole near the ball of the foot. It has a weird kink/bend in it and I’m certain it was due to the way it was sitting in the box (see pic). It’s possible it would have flattened out as I wore it, but I only put the boot on at home to try them on and then back into the box.
I did reorder a 1/2 size down from my original and I’m looking forward to wearing them! Thanks JG for allowing free returns! And thanks for protecting the endangered animals.
