I’ve had my Razorback boots for a little over a year. I waited because I wanted to spend some time in them and give them a proper review. I’ve had and have other quality boots such as Whites, Nicks, Chippewa, Thorogood. Being new to Jim Green, I bought these on sale. I bought them a 1/2 size larger, because no reviews I read mentioned if they were true to size. FYI: they are true to size. Despite them being a little big for me, insoles, wool socks and tight laces keep me from sloshing around. The width is also true to size. I wasn’t thrilled with the “baseball glove” color initially, but using proper boot oil/conditioner darkened them nicely. Considering these are quality made boots, I did expect a break-in period. This isn’t a “fashion” boot after all. They’ve broken in nicely after expected use. I wear them casually and when I’m adventuring in terrain where regular hikers fall short. Mine are well oiled, so they’re fine in the splash zone, but water will get in if submerged beyond a moment.
I do have some (personal) criticisms: I’m not a fan of clam-type speed lacing grommets (top three) on any boot. There’s always a chance of a wayward lace from the other boot may catch and you trip. It’s happened to me and I’ve seen it happen to others. True, it can be funny, but it can also be very bad if it happens at the wrong time/place. Second, the insole is flat. If you have high arches of planter faciitis like me, you’ll want to swap out the insole. Lastly, I would love these to be waterproof. That being said, I know these changes could significantly raise the cost of the boot.
Why 5 star? Because, despite my nit-picking, these a very good boots that are a solid value. I’m very happy with them and I know they’ll last a long time.

I wanted to love these. They are a high quality boot for sure. The construction and leather are high quality. Something about the way the boot breaks in absolutely destroys the top of my toes. They rub against the top of the toe box, i’ve tried thick socks, thin socks, different insoles, and nothing solves the problem. I bought two different models from Jim Green and they both had the same issue. Despite fitting really well everywhere else, the toebox issue persisted after 12 months of trying to break them in. I just want folks (both at JG and future customers) to know that this issue exists. I wish these boots worked for me. I love the way they look.

I love these. I delayed buying these for a while because I thought they would be stiff and clunky. Not so at all. Can’t wait to get them out on the hiking trail.

Great quality but unfortunately had to return because they are just sooo wide. My The length was great but I couldn’t get the boot to feel at all snug on my foot. Would love a pair in a normal D width.

I was very impressed when I bought these, since they seemed very solid and well made, and they looked beautiful (the fudge crazy horse razorbacks). Time has proven that to be the case. However, trying them on initially, I thought I’d got the wrong size as they seemed tight and pinchy, and for some time I wasn’t sure if I should keep them. Eventually I decided they would soften up and I oiled them and started to wear them in. It took a while, I can tell you! These are tough boots! But now I love them. They’re no longer the same fudge crazy horse colour they were when new – instead, they’ve darkened a lot and are more of a traditional hiking boot “nut brown” kind of colour – close to the colour of the buffalo skin Ranger boot, actually. That’s mostly my doing from the stuff I’ve put on them to keep water off and so on, but be aware that they’ll darken up, perhaps a lot. They still look great though, and they’re getting a lovely patina with a bit of wear.
They’re not especially waterproof (water will gradually soak into the exposed edges of the leather where the upper is stitched to the midsole) so I don’t recommend them for wet climates. That said, I’ve worn them in the UK during a cold snap with ice and snow on the ground and they did fine. They’re not insulated, and I had a second pair of socks on for that.
They’re better for hotter, drier places, where the tongue keeps the dust and sand and seeds out of your boot, and the tough leather protects you from spiky plants and sharp stones but lets your feet breathe. Suits me well here in Southern Portugal. They’re great boots.

These boots are amazingly tough. It is difficult to find work boots without an artificial waterproof lining. These traditional leather work boots allow my feet to breath properly through the day without being trapped in the waterproof liners. Name the brand/technology they all amount to spending the day with feet in plastic bags.

I wear these boots daily in my occupation as a golf course superintendent. I have not had a pair of boots last more than one season until I purchased the Jim Greens. Bought to replace Danner Mountain Trail boots $420. The Danner soles could not make the entire golf season and had to be sent back to Oregon for replacement at a cost greater than a pair of new Jim Greens. Job is primarily walking on turf grass!

The Razorbacks have an admirable hand construction. The quality of the leather is remarkable. Lace hardware is finer grade metal that I was able to polish back to shining after they were tarnished from spreading ice melter this winter. Soles show only minimal signs of wear and I just retreated the leather to a supple condition. Ready for another year of service. Thank you for bringing such a choice value product.
